As a faculty member who was just told today that, due to the budget crisis, we won't be hiring for a long time and might not get even cost-of-living raises next year (or the year after), and should "contact alumni" when we go out of town to conferences to try to hit them up for donations, I am pretty damn offended by $10 million spent on this ugly, ugly monstrosity. What a complete and utter waste of money. Who cares about teaching and research? We have BELLS! So go out there and beg for money, all you PhDs!

you don't need to be an architecture student to realize how hideous this thing is. i graduated in '07, read the di everyday and never heard of this until spotting it in someone's fb pictures. the board must have kept this on the dl because they knew how people would react.

if i drive my car into it do you think i can get it to fall over? i think a few ultimate frisbee-player causalities are worth it.

Another ARCH grad here:
$10 million dollars is the price tag on this monstrosity.

Once again, the University shines when it comes to all things architectural.

Next to come: Demo/Relocation of the Mumford House and conversion of the Stock Pavilion into the "house of lost souls"....hell, what ELSE can we use it for? An architecture library? BAH!

I'd be interested to know how much money was wasted on this project by the McFarlands. I'm pretty sure we already have an iconic bell tower here at the University of Illinois. As an Arch Grad, I now get the pleasure of looking out my studio window at this wonderful piece of crap everyday. I'm stoked. Meanwhile, I'm still opeing the windows to the Arch Bldg. in the middle of the winter because the university seems to think that a bell tower is more important than energy efficiency in its current buildings. Bravo Mr. McFarland and the Board of Trustees. You're ignorence never ceases to amaze me.
